Bartering and alternative currency systems offer benefits that national currencies do not. In a world economy based on an unsustainable foundation (the fiat money shell game, usurious banking practices, and a finite petroleum supply), alternative mediums of exchange are becoming more and more important.
What benefits could/should be provided by a medium of exchange? Well, how about sustainability, resilience, eliminating usury, supporting the local community, and allowing the natural reality of abundance (moving beyond the artificial construct of lack)? The latter carries profound sociological (and perhaps even metaphysical) ancillary effects.
Bartering and alternative currencies offer exactly these benefits. However, alternative currency is more flexible and convenient than bartering. As with national currency, alternative currency alleviates the problem of not needing what the other party is offering, or vice-versa. You can still buy goods and services you need, even if the seller doesn't need your goods or services.
The Problem with National Currency Systems
National currency systems are not what we were raised to believe they are. The United States dollar is no longer a promissory note, representing an equal value of precious metals held in reserve. It is mere fiat money, which has value only because it is declared to have value, created out of thin air by banks (not the Federal government, or even the Federal Reserve!) In effect, banks are licensed by governments to commit legal usury and create fiat money out of thin air as numbers in a computer. Fiat money systems represent an inherently usurious and unsustainable shell game designed to benefit bankers only, at everyone else's expense.This is not acceptable or inevitable even though we are conditioned to accept it as normal. Even though it has been around for a long time, it is up to us to find better ways, because—due to it's inherent unsustainability—it may not be around much longer. Profit by bankers in the form of interest is unacceptable because bankers do not actually contribute anything of value to the economy. This is what makes the system unsustainable, and drives inflation, and makes foreclosures, repossessions, unemployment, and eventual economic collapse inevitable.
Fiat money systems create an artificial sense of lack, even when there is plenty of supply, demand, labor, and resourcefulness.
