Description: Briefly describe your requirement. To the extent possible, please think more in terms of your general goals (less in terms of any particular means of achieving them). That is, tell us the “what”, not the “how”. (Ideally, we'll figure out the “how” for you.) This approach is easier, less expensive, and will help create an optimal outcome. If we have the freedom to select from a broader range of possible strategies, we can help you find the ones that meet your goals best and most cost-effectively. So don't “tie our hands” from providing the best possible service by unnecessarily predetermining the strategies for achieving your requirement. Do specify strategies if it is necessary and within your ability to do so.

Reference: If there is a purchase order number or other reference you'd like to appear on your invoice pertaining to this service order, please specify it here.

Payment: If package pricing, a pre-existing estimate, or an agreed-upon bid does not apply, we will invoice you in one-minute increments for any service provided at our standard hourly rate or at the hourly rate we charged you last time, whichever is less. Advance payment is generally not required for follow-up services.

Estimates: Estimates are provided only when requested. They are customarily provided free of charge only for new projects. If you are seeking follow-up services, and you request an estimate without special arrangements otherwise, you are placing a billable order for an estimate. Developing an estimate is a billable service because it is necessary to conduct research and develop strategies upon which estimates are based. These things take time and expertise. Do you really want an estimate? It is less expensive to work without, because then you do not have to pay for the extra time it takes to conduct advance theoretical research and develop advance theoretical strategies. It is less risky to work with estimates, because then you have a ballpark idea of what it will cost before making a decision. Please choose the cost/risk level that is best for you. Or circumvent this trade-off by specifying a budget (see below). We will support your decision and provide services appropriate to your decision. (See also “About Estimates and Bids”.)

Budget: If cost is a concern, and the service described above is not covered by package pricing, a pre-existing estimate, or an agreed-upon bid, please specify your budget for the completion of the requirement described above. That is, think about what it would be worth to you to get the requirement described above satisfied right the first time. It is less expensive for you to give thought to your budget and values for a moment than for us to work up frivolous estimates that may be out of your ballpark anyway. If you specify a budget for this requirement, and we do not believe we can meet your requirement in the ballpark of your budget, we will communicate to that effect, drop the matter, and bill nothing. Specifying a budget is the best way to circumvent the trade-off between expense and risk.
